Do heat protecting sprays for hair really work?

I blow dry and straighten my hair fairly often and wanted to know if it was something worth getting. My hair is colored so it has a fair amount of damage already. I don't plan on spending a lot of money on anything like this, so are there any cheap ones that work just as well?
